Pissouromoutti nature trail: A fantastic hike with panoramic views

by Savvas Michail

Description

The Pissouromoutti nature trail is a stunning showcase of the unique Akamas style, offering a landscape that feels worlds apart from the dense pine forests of Troodos or Paphos. As part of the UNESCO-protected Akamas region, this path preserves a raw, mediterranean essence characterized by low-lying shrubs and ancient geology. The hike culminates at a peak that provides a truly breathtaking panoramic view, allowing you to survey the entire peninsula and the surrounding sea from one of the area’s highest vantage points.

Technically, this is a concise and manageable circular trail covering a total distance of 3 km. With a gentle elevation gain of approximately 130 meters, it is widely considered an easy hike, making it accessible for most fitness levels. You can expect to complete the entire loop in about one hour, making it an ideal choice for a quick morning trek or a sunset stroll.

Viewpoints

The highlight of the experience is the continuous scenery, as the trail offers constant views of the Akamas region and the distant Mediterranean. Upon reaching the summit, the perspective shifts to a grand panoramic vista of the coast, where the rugged shoreline meets the shimmering endless blue of the sea. From this height, you can often spot landmarks like Chrysochou Bay and the wild beaches of the north coast.

Starting points

The trailhead is located at Smigies picnic area at Neo Chorio in Polis Chrysochous. The location of the picnic site is available to all known maps but also at the nature trail information table further below. Smigies picnic area is also the trailhead for the Smigies nature trail.

Personal comments

Pissouromoutti nature trail is a fantastic, short escape that packs a lot of beauty into a small distance. Because it shares the same starting point at the Smigies picnic area, it is incredibly easy for hikers to combine both trails for a more substantial day out. Furthermore, the local network is highly interconnected; the Smigies trail links up with the Adonis trail, which in turn connects to the famous Aphrodite trail, offering endless possibilities for those who want to explore the heart of Akamas even further.
