Persephone nature trail: An astonishing trail suitable for everyone

by Savvas Michail

Description

Starting from Troodos Square, you’ll find the gateways to two of the island’s most captivating paths: the Atalante nature trail and the Persephone nature trail. While they share the same rugged mountain DNA, each offers a distinct experience. The first is a winding journey through ancient forests, while the other is a panoramic trek to breathtaking vistas. Both trails are nestled within the Troodos National Forest Park, a protected Natura 2000 site. This makes them more than just a scenic hike; they are a walk through one of Europe’s most vital and biodiverse ecosystems.

The Persephone trail is a gentle, ~6 km out-and-back journey that is perfect for families and hikers of all fitness levels. With a modest elevation gain of only 150 meters, the path offers a relaxed pace, typically taking about 2 hours to complete. Its accessibility and minimal incline make it an ideal choice for those seeking a peaceful escape into nature without a strenuous climb.

Viewpoints

Much of the trail is sheltered by a cool canopy, especially near the start where the dense vegetation and towering black pine trees create the atmosphere of a magical forest. This shaded path eventually leads you to the spectacular Makria Kontarka viewpoint. From here, the forest opens up to reveal a stunning panoramic view of the Limassol district, the Amiantos asbestos mine, and the rolling mountain peaks stretching toward the horizon.

Starting points

The trailhead is located a few hundred meters away from Troodos hotel. The trail is linear with only its trailhead being accessible by car. The exact GPS location is depicted in the nature trail information table. For parking there is some space at the trailhead. Otherwise you can park at Troodos square parking area.

Personal comments

This trail is a perfect choice for beginners visiting Troodos or for those staying in nearby hotels looking for a refreshing outdoor activity. Its beauty shines in every season, thanks to its manageable distance and the natural canopy provided by the towering pine trees.

The experience transforms during the winter months, becoming even more magical, especially when the path is blanketed in glistening snow. Regardless of when you visit, the Persephone trail offers a rewarding escape into nature. If you find yourself in the area, it is absolutely worth the visit. I am sure you will love it!

The trail shown in the GPS Map is slightly modified and returned back via a different route in an attempt to make it circular. My advice is to return back through the trail. It is much prettier.
