Kannoures nature trail: Discover the most rugged trail in Cyprus

by Savvas Michail

Description

Regarded as one of the most rugged yet breathtakingly wild trails in Cyprus, the Kannoures nature trail offers a truly immersive nature experience. Carving its way through the heart of the Troodos Forest, the path connects the picturesque village of Kakopetria with the main road leading to Troodos Square. The trail follows the rhythmic flow of a mountain stream, challenging hikers as it weaves back and forth across the water multiple times, surrounded by the raw, untamed beauty of the island’s highest peaks.

This 9 km linear trail covers a total distance of 18 km out-and-back over demanding, rugged terrain. With a significant elevation gain of 975 meters and the challenge of crossing the stream multiple times, it is categorized as difficult to very difficult. The route demands excellent physical fitness and sturdy hiking shoes or boots, as several sections can be slippery and unstable.

Viewpoints

The journey begins with a 2.4 km gravel ascent, climbing steadily to reveal the first of many breathtaking vistas. This initial stretch offers magnificent views of the Troodos Forest, a protected Natura 2000 site of immense ecological value. Along the way, magical viewpoints overlook the mountain stream as it carves through the valley floor, framed by surrounding peaks that stand like towering giants. On clear days, free from dust, the horizon stretches even further to offer a remarkable glimpse of the distant Morphou Bay.

Beyond the initial climb, the trail delves deep into the forest for approximately 5.6 km, ascending gradually toward the Troodos mountain peaks. This stretch stays close to the rhythmic flow of the stream, where the scenery shifts dramatically at every turn. You will transition from sections of lush, dense vegetation to raw, craggy rocky terrain, offering a diverse and ever-changing landscape as you climb higher into the heart of the mountain.

The final stretch follows a gravel road for about 1 km, leading you to the main road toward Troodos Square. If you choose to return the same way (unless you have a second car waiting at the finish), the descent offers a completely new perspective. If you didn’t look back during the climb, you will be stunned by the view: the valley transforms into a vast, majestic gorge, where the echoes of the running water create a unique and tranquil atmosphere that feels truly one of a kind.

Starting points

Both ends of the trail are accessible by car, giving you the flexibility to choose between a linear one-way hike or a more demanding roundtrip. While it can be hiked in either direction, starting with the ascent from Kakopetria and returning downhill is a preferred way to tackle the elevation. You can find the exact GPS coordinates and location details for both access points in the nature trail information table.

Personal comments

Difficulty

The trail is exceptionally difficult. Completing the full out-and-back journey totals 18 km, much of which crosses rugged, rocky terrain that demands extra physical effort and precise, careful footing at every step. A major challenge involves the numerous stream crossings, where you must either step directly into the water or attempt to balance on slippery stones (which is strongly discouraged for safety). If there has been significant rainfall in the days prior, your shoes will almost certainly get wet. During the summer months, the water levels drop, making it easier to cross without getting soaked.

What you Need to know

The Kannoures nature trail is undeniably tough and heavily rocky. It is important to note that mobile phone signal is unavailable in certain remote sections, making it essential to prepare accordingly. Additionally, some stretches become quite narrow, requiring focused concentration and steady footing as you navigate the more technical parts of the route.

Recommendations

It is essential to wear sturdy hiking shoes with excellent grip, hiking boots are strongly preferred for the necessary ankle support. Given the rugged terrain and the risk of slipping, never hike this trail alone. The lack of mobile signal significantly increases the danger in case of an accident. We recommend joining one of the many local hiking groups that frequent this route or ensuring you are accompanied by a partner for safety.

Is it worth it?

Absolutely! This trail offers unique and breathtaking views unlike any other on the island. To truly appreciate its beauty, take your time and enjoy every step of the journey.
