Description
The Kalidonia nature trail is among the most popular trails in Cyprus mainly due to its easy access and amazing scenery. The hiker walks along a running stream in dense vegetation under the tall pine trees with various sections having rich glowing moss on the rocks creating a magical experience. It is needless to say that the Kalidonia waterfall provides a cooling sensation in all seasons.
The trail is linear 3.5 km long in one way. Hence it sums up to 7 km out-and-back. The terrain is rocky and needs constant attention on your footstep. Both ends of the hike are accessible by car with the main trailhead located at Psilo Dentro locality. The trail is ~4 hours long (out-and-back). It can be done circular by following a section of Pouziaris nature trail.

Viewpoints

The Kalidonia nature trail offers a “magical scenery” where the constant murmur of the Kryos Potamos (Cold River) accompanies hikers through a dense, lush forest of tall pine and black pine trees. The environment is particularly enchanting in winter, as the running stream flows with greater force and the path may even be dusted with snow at higher elevations. Along the rocky banks, glowing green moss and diverse flora—including endemic species like the golden oak and Troodos sage—create a vibrant tapestry of color and texture. A major highlight is the 12-meter high Kalidonia Waterfall, which serves as a refreshing centerpiece where the spray provides a cool “breeze breath” across all seasons. This idyllic setting remains one of the most picturesque and beautiful viewpoints in Cyprus.

The Kalidonia (or Caledonia) Waterfall in Cyprus was named by Scottish visitors in 1878 who were reminded of their homeland by the area’s beauty. The name is derived from Caledonia, which is the ancient Latin name for Scotland.

Starting points
The trail can be accessed by both of its ends, both found in the main road of Limassol – Platres – Troodos. The first one is outside the village of Platres, next to the restaurant Psilo Dentro. The second one is a few kilometers further up, following a right exit from the main road. The exact GPS location is provided in the nature trail information section.
Personal comments
This is an iconic trail and a very classic one. Due to its easy access it is very popular among the hiking community in Cyprus. It’s one of the most walked trails since it can be done all year around. The majority of the trail is under shade and each season provides different colors with the stream, the vegetation and the tall pine trees forming a scenery that will amaze you each time you hike it regardless of how many times you did it in the past. This is a favorite trail that is totally recommended and totally worth your time.
The Kalidonia nature trail has a rocky terrain, which requires an extra effort not to slip. Therefore, good hiking shoes/boots are recommended. The path however is really nice and entertaining along the whole way up or down.
The trail is linear but can be combined with a section of Pouziaris nature trail and make it circular with a total distance of ~9 km. The difficulty will remain to 2 – Moderate.
