Atalante nature trail: An amazing hike in Cyprus black forest

by Savvas Michail

Description

Perched in the high altitudes of the Troodos Mountains, the Atalante nature trail offers an unparalleled 13.5 km escape into the heart of Cyprus’s wild interior. This circular route orbits the peak of Mount Olympus, winding through ancient forests with some of them being 800 year-old and offering dramatic, 360-degree panoramic views that stretch from the island’s northern coast to the southern shores of Limassol. Whether you are a seasoned hiker looking for a steady trek or a nature enthusiast eager to explore abandoned chromite mines and diverse mountain flora, this well-marked path provides a relatively level, high-altitude journey that captures the true essence of the Mediterranean’s highest reaches.

The trail is circular with a total distance of 13.5 km. It is considered easy to moderate, since there is no significant elevation. It is almost flat with an easy to walk terrain. The total hiking duration is 4-5 hours.

Viewpoints

Walking the Atalante trail feels like standing on the spine of Cyprus. It provides awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks, while certain clearings offer a rare, bird’s-eye perspective of the island. On a clear day, you can trace the landscape all the way to the southern coasts of Limassol and Paphos, or look inland toward the distant villages of the Nicosia district.

As you traverse the path, you will discover a natural spring with potable water (located near the 3 km mark) and several well-placed benches for resting. The route also offers a glimpse into the region’s industrial past with an abandoned chromite mine. Throughout the hike, the landscape is dotted with magnificent black pines and very old juniper trees, standing as living monuments of the Troodos forest.

Starting points

The route begins at the information board in Troodos Square, located behind the old post office. The trail is circular and ends in the nearby parking area, not far from the trailhead. The exact GPS location is provided in the natural trail information table.

Personal comments

The Atalante Nature Trail is the premier destination for hikers in every season. During the summer, the Troodos mountains offer a refreshing breeze and a cool sanctuary from the intense Mediterranean sun, providing a vitalizing escape from the heat. In winter, the forest transforms into a wonderland of vibrant colors, offering magical vistas of the snow-dusted canopy and crystal-clear views extending all the way to the Limassol coastline.

While the terrain itself is relatively easy, the Atalante nature trail is categorized as moderate, primarily due to its 13.5 km length. During the winter months, trekking through the snow naturally increases the difficulty, as the extra effort required for stable footing adds a layer of physical challenge to the journey.

The trail is totally recommended in all seasons! For people looking to shorten the hike, they can do up to 10km where the trail crosses the road. Hence you can have a second card parked there and hike it one way.
