Description
Nestled just a few hundred meters beyond the village of Gerakies on the road toward the Kykkos Monastery, the Ariadni nature trail offers a captivating journey through the Cypriot countryside. The hike begins with a brief but invigorating steep ascent that leads adventurers to the Kavallos fire lookout station, the trail’s highest vantage point. From this summit and throughout the remainder of the path, hikers are rewarded with sweeping, panoramic views of the lush Paphos Forest and the rolling landscapes of the Marathasa Valley.
This circular 4.5 km route is classified as a moderate hike, typically requiring about two hours to complete. Located within the Nicosia district, the trail reaches a peak altitude of 1,165 metres as it winds along scenic mountain ridgelines. Because much of the path is highly exposed to the sun, trekking is best enjoyed on cloudy days or during cooler hours to ensure a more comfortable experience while navigating the open terrain.

Viewpoints
The trail is short but offers beautiful panoramic views. I can split it into four sections:

- Initial Ascent to Kavallos Fire Lookout: The hike begins with a challenging 40-minute steep climb, gaining approximately 200 meters in elevation. Upon reaching the summit, hikers can take a short detour to the Kavallos fire lookout station—the trail’s highest point at 1,165 meters—to enjoy sweeping views of the Paphos Forest and Marathasa Valley.
- Ridgeline Walk & Panoramic Views: The second section levels out for a leisurely 40-to-50-minute walk along mountain ridgelines. This stretch offers continuous, unobstructed panoramas, and on exceptionally clear days, trekkers may even spot the Pentadaktylos range and Morphou Bay in the distance.
- Entertaining Forest Descent: The third section transitions into a brief and engaging downhill path through lush vegetation. This part of the trail is known for its diverse endemic plants and the sounds of local birdlife, providing a more shaded environment before reaching the final leg.
- Village Road Return: To complete the loop, the final section follows a quiet asphalt road for approximately 800 meters. This path leads through the picturesque, stone-built village of Gerakies, passing traditional houses and local cafes before returning to the original starting point.

Starting points
The trail has a starting point a few metres outside the Gerakies village, where the exact location is provided at the nature trail information table. The Ariadni trail has a common section with Discovery Natural Trail or passes nearby from a section of the Mountain trail, therefore an experienced hiker may choose to do his/her own combinations making a more challenging route.
Personal comments
The Ariadni Nature Trail is a versatile and visually stunning route popular for its breathtaking panoramic views. Because only the initial section provides tree cover, this trail is ideally suited for winter hiking or trekking on overcast days to avoid the intense sun exposure along the ridgelines. Furthermore, its strategic location acts as a hub for intersecting trails, offering seasoned hikers the opportunity to combine routes and create a more extensive, challenging trekking experience.

People seeking an additional easy trail can combine it with Natural trail of Rigaina’s Baths and Chlio, which is amazing with lush green scenery and a stream running almost all year around, in comparison with Ariadni’s trail and its panoramic views.
