Description
Nestled in the rugged northwest of Cyprus, the Agia Tilliria natural trail offers an evocative journey through one of the island’s most untouched regions. Your adventure begins on a winding gravel road that sets a rustic tone before revealing the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Agios Theodoros, an abandoned village reclaimed by nature. As the path unfolds, you’ll cross a traditional wooden bridge and navigate diverse terrain that rewards hikers with sweeping views of deep, pine-clad gorges and the shimmering Mediterranean Sea in the distance. This trail perfectly captures a walk into time, blending historical echoes with breathtaking coastal panoramas.
The Agia Tilliria trail is linear with a total distance of 13.6 km out and back and is categorized as moderate due to its distance and elevation gain, which is 265 meters measured one way. The trailhead is a bit after Pigenia near the area of Kato Pyrgos and the estimated time for the hike is 2 hours and a half one way and 4-5 hours including the return. Personal comments
The Agia Tilliria natural trail belongs to Nicosia district and specifically to the area of Kato Pyrgos village. Kato Pyrgos is a remote village by the sea, which is accessible either through Nicosia passing by the occupied area or through Paphos. For people living away from Paphos (assuming they go through Paphos), it may act as a deterrent reason due to its long drive.
Nevertheless, the area feels distinct from the rest of Cyprus due to its remote location and unique geography. The landscape, which rises sharply into mountainous terrain adjacent to the coast, evokes the dramatic cliffs of Crete. Hiking here offers the unique experience of admiring the endless, shimmering blue of the sea from a true high-altitude perspective.
If it happens to be in the area, it is totally recommended!! The terrain and the area is totally different and worth your visit.
